About me:

I am a post-doctoral researcher at the Computer Graphics Department of the University of Rostock in Germany. Having originally focused on discrete math and theoretical computer science, I soon became enticed by graph theory, especially graph drawing and finally wandered off into graph visualization. These days, I apply and extend my graph visualization experience in collaboration with biologists and medical scientists from Rostock's interdisciplinary graduate school dIEM oSiRiS (see video) and with the Caleydo project team from Austria (see video). So, my recent work is often done in a computational biology or life science context. Past work experiences include UI design for a Product Lifecycle Management System at the ECS GmbH, the development of the Honeycomb Visualization Tool for IBM Beehive during an internship at IBM's Visual Communication Lab, coordinative support for the development of visual e-manuals for handheld devices in the Landesforschungsschwerpunkt M6C (now PROVIS), and a research assistantship for the VisMaster EU project. In my free time, I'm an avid hiker and climber, and like to enjoy the outdoors (see pictures).

Research Interests:

My main research interests concern the visualization of special graph classes, like bipartite or interval graphs, as well as graph representations aside regular node-link-layouts. As special graph classes and layouts often pose additional challenges to the visualization process, this covers the entire visualization pipeline from the efficient storage and preprocessing of these kind of graphs all the way to the final interaction methods on the resulting visualizations. So far, my focus lies mostly on the development of exploratory visualization techniques for trees/hierarchies and hypergraphs, because they occur frequently in various application domains.
